All electrical contractors will have six months from this date to implement the changes into their projects and testing / certification work.
What are the Wiring Regulations or 'regs' as they are sometimes called?
The IET Wiring Regulations is a national standard (British Standard BS 7671) for electrical installation. It is basically a rather large book of rules and regulations which must be met for each and every electrical installation.
History of the 'regs'
The 1st edition of the Wiring Regulations (regs) was issued way back in 1882 in an attempt to minimise fire and injury resulting from incorrectly installed wiring and electric lighting. The protective device was a re-wirable fuse.
Several editions of the 'regs' were released over the following years, each issue improving the safety requirements of electrical installations, this has continued right up to the present day 17th edition.
Present day 17th edition.
We are currently onto the third amendment (AMD3) of the 2015 17th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations : -
There have been three amendments to the 17th edition since its release in 2015.
So when is the 18th edition deadline?
From January 1 2019, it will then be a requirement that all electrical installations designed after this date comply with BS 7671:2018, 18th Edition (2018).
An ability to show a level of understanding and awareness of the changes will be a priority for everyone involved in the Techniserve team.
